As
dermatologists, we have extensive knowledge about the biology
and pathology of the skin.
This expertise allows us to decide which medical or
surgical approach is best for each patient. Most surgical procedures for benign
and malignant lesions
can be easily performed in our outpatient setting.
-
Cryosurgery
(liquid nitrogen) is commonly used to treat warts, precancerous
lesions and occasional skin cancers.
The successful elimination of these lesions is a result
of the freezing temperature which destroys tissue.
- Electrosurgery
is a frequently used form of surgery for removal of benign and
malignant lesions. Tissue destruction is accomplished by
heat generated by an electrosurgical apparatus.
- Excisional
surgery is used for complete removal of benign and
malignant lesions when indicated.
This
procedure allows for microscopic analysis of the tissue.
-
Mohs
micrographic surgery is a technique that allows a skin
surgeon to operate on skin cancer and have the highest
certainty that the tumor is completely removed. In this
staged procedure, the tumor is removed while leaving as much
normal skin behind as possible. In this way, the patient
benefits from the highest cure rate and smallest defect
possible to remove the cancer. The wound is then closed for
the best cosmetic result. Mohs surgery is performed on an
outpatient basis in our office under local anesthesia.
Patients should plan to spend the entire day with us.
Indications for Mohs surgery include locations of the tumor
(such as nose or ear), the size, the presentation, the type
of tumor or if it is a reoccurring one. Based on one of
these criteria, your doctor may recommend Mohs surgery for a
skin cancer.
